Community Storytellers

about

The Community Storytellers team at Full Spectrum Features in Chicago reached out to me for some support with creating marketing assets for an upcoming premier of three short films. The event was going to be a celebration of community voices telling stories from their communities.

The deliverables included in the brief were: several social media posts in different aspect ratios, some banners to project as a background for a panel discussion, printed poster and signs as well as an eight page program booklet to pass out at the premier. With the event about three months away, we had to get straight to work exchanging copy and edits.

challenges

The team gave me an animated graphic of collage style photographs with graphic text across the middle that they wanted me to use as my main inspiration for the assets. They also gave me three colors that they wanted me to use in the designs. Each storyteller and their film would be assigned a color. The main challenge in creating these deliverables was creating a cohesive look throughout all of the different assets, using recognizably collage style compositions while ensuring that the important information was clear and readable.

Translating this same design style into a program booklet that works for print was also a challenge.

design solutions

The project was split into three batches with staggered deadlines so that we could prioritize the deliverables that were needed first. The first batch focused on social media graphics starting with introducing the audience to the key details of the event: the date time as well as images sourced from a library of behind the scenes images from each film. The same design was made in both instagram feed and story dimensions, as well as introduction posts for each storyteller and their film. Each storyteller was assigned a color that was used throughout the project to visually distinguish their film and headshot from the others. Curving graphic shapes were also used as a visual tool to delineate space and break up the composition in each design.

The program booklet was the largest part of this project. Utilizing the visual language of the social media posts to create a sleek and colorful program booklet with interesting layouts. I chose to have the section titles in a much larger display font so as to use the text as a visual element of each page’s layout. I wanted to have each page be slightly different but still cohesive. The same three colors were used throughout the booklet to create visual interest with graphic shapes and in the color of the display title text.

final product

The final deliverables were a cohesive group of marketing assets that helped Full spectrum Features promote their in person event online as well as printed signs and booklet to translate the same feeling from online into the in person space of the event. The designs were colorful and eyecatching but also created space to be the backdrop of the artists and creatives whose work was being showcased through the screening. The design lended themselves to the community aspect of the event by including images of many of the actors and camera people involved in the creation of the films which created a sense of multiplicity of perspectives. The program booklet was able to convey the necessary information for the organizations, storytellers and films that would be shown at the event as well as act as a important keepsake to mark this moment in time for the communities that this event sought to shed light on.
