Cabot Petoia

Public Relations Specialist
Full Spectrum Doula

Shaping stories through communication and care. Public relations services for individuals and organizations working to dismantle oppressive systems and build towards an equitable world.

about

Cabot is a public relations specialist as well as a full spectrum doula. The brief for this particular project was to create a website to unify two very different kinds of professional work that Cabot offers. The need was for a design solution that could provide some distinction to channel the differing audience that each kind of work draws but to do it in a way that represent Cabot as a multifaceted professional and highlights their services and skills above all.

challenges

The main challenge that I faced designing this website was deciding the format of the navigation. I wanted it to be easy to navigate to each separate page but also be relatively simple to avoid confusion. Typically successful websites focus on one thing, whether that is selling one kind of product or service. It was an interesting challenge to approach this project knowing from the very beginning that this website would encapsulate two distinct sections.

design solutions

It was my intention not to present these professional offerings as totally separate business but as an interconnected way to showcase the services Cabot is able to offer and highlight their skills and expertise along the way.

To ensure that both offerings could reach their targeted audiences I opted for a continuous scrolling, landing page style page for both the public relations work and doula work. We decided to make the public relations page the main landing page of the site since this is where most of Cabot’s clients and income are situated. By scrolling down the page, a site visitor gets everything they need to know about Cabot’s services as well as a call to action at the bottom prompting them to reach out.

Similarly to the PR page, the page for Cabot’s doula services is one continuous scroll. This works because site visitors interested in that topic can easily find everything they need on that page, and the people who aren’t interested can easily avoid it.

The footer is important on most sites because it appears at the bottom of every page. It’s especially important on Cabot’s site because of how it proves a “back to top” button and also shows a site map of all the pages on the site including the blog page which isn’t link anywhere else. The footer navigation utilizes anchor links to jump to the specific sections in each page instead of having a separate page for “contact” for example.

final product

The idea for this simple two page system is that a site visitor interested in either one of these kind of services can easily find what they need and not have to navigate through many different pages or buttons. The final product is a colorful, queer AF, clear and informative website that will help connect Cabot to their ideal clients for the years to come.

Cabot:

“I chose to work with Leaf because I needed a website for my small business and wanted to hire a fellow queer small business owner.

Leaf brought my vision to life and built a website that represents two distinct parts of my work -- the final website was beautiful, cohesive, and the product of lots of organization, patience, and communication by Leaf. I would recommend Leaf's services to anyone who needs web design!”
